Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
