Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
